Santa Gertrudis New and Updates

Date 17/04/2008

PRESS RELEASE

Yulgilbar and The Lakes, Santa Gertrudis to merge.

The Myer Family and the Bolster Family announce today, that their long established Santa Gertrudis studs, based at Baryulgil and Woodenbong will merge.

Yulgilbar, Stud No. 13, established in 1952 and The Lakes, Stud No. 239, established in 1968 have between them, close to one hundred years of breeding, showing and selling Santa Gertrudis cattle.

The merger will be effected by Yulgilbar acquiring all the classified females from The Lakes Stud. Sarah Myer said “ The addition of The Lakes bloodlines to the Yulgilbar herd will greatly extend the genetic pool at Yulgilbar, to the benefit of our breed in general and to our clients in particular”.

John Bolster said, “ We believe that the bloodlines which have been developed at The Lakes will combine well with the Yulgilbar herd and will advance the breed. I wish the merger every success”.

Rob Sinnamon, General Manager at Yulgilbar said, “The Lakes female acquisition will be a significant benefit to the Yulgilbar herd. These cattle are a logical fit into our breeding program. Being bred in similar coastal conditions was a considerable attraction to the purchase of this highly regarded herd.”

The purchase of “The Lakes” herd has enabled further expansion of the Yulgilbar stud-breeding herd, increasing numbers to approximately 700 stud females. Yulgilbar run an annual bull sale – this year to be held on Friday 5th September.

3,100 commercial Santa Gertrudis females are currently run on Yulgilbar Station, they are the backbone of the herd.

A field day will be conducted at Yulgilbar Station (Broadwater division) on Thursday
22nd May.

New Work Placements required for Tocal College students

Tocal has three full-time courses: Certificate III in Agriculture, Certificate III in Horse Husbandry and Certificate IV in Agriculture. Work placements are an important part of each of these courses as it not only gives the students a chance to experience work on commercial properties but it also gives the farm owners/managers an opportunity to have a look at possible future employees.

Across Australia, there is an acute shortage of skilled rural workers. Tocal is the only Agricultural College in NSW providing vocational training in agriculture and horse husbandry and, therefore, is a major provider of skilled rural workers for the Australian agriculture sector.

Over the past few years, some of the farms, horse enterprises and rural businesses have been sold, or circumstances have changed, which means that we now have fewer places to send our students for work experience. Most farmers take students for work placement because they see value in encouraging young people to develop a career in agriculture and they are prepared to contribute their time and experience to that development. The fact that they have extra help on the farm is a bonus.

The Certificate III students do a number of 5 day work placements throughout the year. Generally, Tocal staff drive the students to the farms on Monday morning (some are put onto trains or buses). They work from Monday to Friday and the farmer returns them to College on Friday (this may require the farmer to drive them to the college or pay for the students return bus/train ticket). Most farms provide accommodation and meals for the students (they generally stay in the farmers house), however, the thoroughbred studs generally provide accommodation and reimburse the students for food and travel (if students drive themselves).

The Certificate IV students have two 4 week work placements (May and September), where they work on farms, horse enterprises and rural businesses throughout Australia and New Zealand. They finish their course after the September work placement and are then looking for employment.

We are looking for beef, dairy, sheep, cropping, horse, viticulture, horticulture and organic enterprises as well as rural businesses (such as Stock & Station Agents. Rural Suppliers, Irrigation Businesses, Farm Machinery etc) who can provide meaningful work experience for Tocal students.

If you are interested in being part of Tocal’s work placement program, please call Travers Powell (Ph: 49398822 or email: travers.powell@dpi.nsw.gov.au) for Certificate III work placements, or Bruce West (Ph: 49398825 or email: bruce.west@ dpi.nsw.gov.au) for Certificate IV work placements.
